RD&D SERVICES

RD&D is a research-driven initiative dedicated to advancing the science and practice of search and detection. We leverage extensive public safety experience alongside the latest developments in airborne and submersible drone technologies to drive innovation in the detection of elusive targets in complex environments.

Our mission:

See the unseeable – find the unfindable.

Our multidisciplinary team conducts cutting-edge research in the use of thermal, multi-spectral, and submersible drone systems, and develops evidence-based training and educational resources for public safety personnel and forensic practitioners. We also explore advanced forensic photo analysis techniques to enhance detection capabilities and inform best practices.

Through rigorous field testing, knowledge mobilization, and hands-on instruction, we aim to elevate operational readiness, enhance public safety outcomes, and support professional communities engaged in search and recovery missions.

RD&D is committed to sharing knowledge, building capacity, and advancing the field through collaboration and education.

LECTURES

Lectures on Canine & Drone Human Remains Detection

RD&D Services offers specialized lectures that explore the evolving intersection of scent detection, forensic investigation, and advanced technology. Designed for academic institutions, professional conferences, and training environments, these sessions deliver practical insights grounded in operational experience and current research.

Our presentations are built around real-world cases and field-tested methods, offering a clear view into how search theory translates into action. Whether speaking to forensic science students or experienced public safety teams, we tailor each session to inform, challenge, and expand understanding.

Topics include:

•  Drone and K9 coordination in search operations
•  Detection of human remains and clandestine graves using scent and remote technologies
•  Emerging tools: AI, robotics, thermal and multispectral imaging
•  Deployment strategies for integrated search teams

Our goal is to connect science with strategy — helping audiences understand not just what works, but why it works. These lectures are designed to spark new thinking, improve field practices, and support the next generation of search professionals.

RESEARCH

Multispectral Drone Detection of Clandestine Graves Using Pig Cadavers
2023 – Present
Led a collaborative research project with Ontario Tech University investigating the efficacy of drone-based multispectral sensors for detecting clandestine graves simulated with pig cadavers. The study focuses on identifying spectral signatures associated with disturbed soil and decomposition processes to improve search accuracy in forensic investigations.
Role: Principal Investigator
Partners: Ontario Tech University
Outcomes: Ongoing data collection and analysis with plans for publication and operational training integration

AI-Enhanced Pixel-Level Thermal Analysis for Human Remains Detection
2026 – Present
Conducting a research project exploring the application of AI-based software to analyze pixel-level thermal imagery captured by drones for detecting human remains and clandestine graves. The study aims to develop advanced algorithms capable of distinguishing subtle thermal anomalies in varied terrains to enhance forensic search capabilities.
Role: Principal Investigator
Partners: Ontario Tech University
Outcomes: Development of prototype AI models with ongoing field validation and plans for peer-reviewed publication

ORIGIN

RD&D Services was founded to bring together proven field experience and modern technology — helping public safety, search and rescue, and forensic teams operate more effectively in challenging conditions.

Our approach is rooted in real-world search operations. With origins in K9-based detection and human remains recovery, we understand the demands of high-risk environments and the importance of precision, safety, and coordination. That foundation informs everything we do.

Today, RD&D integrates advanced tools like drones, submersible ROVs, thermography, photogrammetry, multispectral imaging, and AI-based detection to support search teams in the field. We help identify areas of interest, map search zones, and monitor operations in real time — improving efficiency while reducing exposure to unnecessary hazards.

Our goal is simple: to provide reliable, mission-ready support that enhances search outcomes. Whether assisting law enforcement, forensic investigators, or academic researchers, RD&D delivers practical solutions tailored to each operation.

The company is led by professionals with decades of experience in law enforcement, tactical operations, and military service — ensuring that every project is grounded in operational insight and executed with care.
